How to Improve Your Sound? or How To Not Sound Like An Ox? 🐂

🎉Xin Nian Kuai Le! 🧧Gung Hei Fat Choy!🎋
Happy Year of the Ox! 🐂
Wishing you all a very Happy Niu 牛 🐂Year! 😂

It's also Valentine's Day ♥️ tomorrow and wishing you all a great V-Day as well!

I recently posted on social media an impromptu tutorial on How To Improve Your Sound and received such an enthusiastic response.

I received many requests to film a tutorial on smooth bow changes at the frog and in preparation, I began experimenting with Sibelius Violin Concerto, second movement.

So this is a practice video of me on Day 1 of Sibelius.

It's a good example of what you can consciously do to create a lot of tonal variety and nuance in sound using what I consider the 5 elements to developing your sound, something which I'm about to teach in my Violin Bootcamp 2.0 in the Friday Fundamentals class called Improving Your Sound.

VAPPS is my acronym of what I consider the 5 elements that go into your sound production on the violin:

V = Vibrato

A = Angle (bow)

P = Pressure (bow)

P = Point of contact (contact point)

S = Speed (bow)

For more about how to develop your sound, also check out my full-length tutorial (5 Tips to Improve Your Sound), which I shot by the ocean in Newfoundland in the summertime.

If you’re like me and want a breath of warmer air (I've been doing some heavy snow shovelling lately this week), feel free to check it out just to get the summer air!

Having this kind of violin technical knowledge can definitely be put to good musical use in any of your repertoire... or in any other practical (silly?) applications like my Niu 牛 Year video 🐂🎶👇...

Hope you enjoy and Happy V-Day/Year of the Ox!

P.S. You may still enroll in Violin Bootcamp 2.0 in the second half starting March 15, 2021 and join the last six Friday Fundamentals classes that I'll be teaching! The Bootcamp Ninjas are active in our private Facebook group and posting great progress videos!

On the schedule are upcoming classes on: Shifting, Ninja Practice Audit, Double Stops, Peak Performance for Classical Musicians, Vibrato, and Colour and Character in Musicality. If you'd like to join us, feel free to contact me here ASAP to jump start your technique and get an extra jolt of inspiration this winter!
