How To String Cross Like A Boss

Have you ever attended an entire violin technique class just on string crossings?

In all my years of studying the violin, I don't think I ever have! 🤔

In my Summer Violin Bootcamp, I teach an entire 60-minute class sharing 13 tips on how to improve string crossing technique on the violin and viola.

Believe it or not, string crossing technique involves not only right-hand and bow arm considerations but also left-hand considerations as well!

(Be sure to scroll down to the bottom to see what I think is the most helpful tip (Tip #5!) to unlocking better string crossings AND better overall bow technique!)

String crossings are everywhere in the violin repertoire.

Some notable examples include:

Mozart Symphony No. 39, K. 543 IV. Allegro Mozart Symphony No. 39, K. 543, IV. Allegro - string crossings

Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin (BWV 1001-1006),

Slow movements with chords ("slurred" string crossings):

Bach Partita No. 1 in B minor, Sarabande - string crossings

YsaĂże Sonata No. 2, I. Obsession:

In my latest violin tutorial, I share five of my thirteen tips on how to improve string crossings:

Tip #1: Divide & Conquer: practice string crossings on open strings

Tip #2: Get to know the different parts of your bow: frog, middle, tip

Tip #3: Know your (string crossing) shapes: arcs, curves, hooks

Tip #4: Be mindful of elbow level

Tip #5: Find freedom in the arm: remember the ball and socket joint in the shoulder

(Arm Joint #2: glenohumeral joint)

shoulder joint (glenohumeral joint)
